Our new favourite - Hekso Treehouse in Matsalu
Hekso Treehouse is a beautiful Estonian forest cottage located in Matsalu, right next to the Matsalu National Park. Actually starting from this summer there are two Hekso Treehouses available for booking. Each Hekso holiday home includes a spacious terrace and a sauna.
Upon arrival you will have to park your car to the private parking lot and then walk along the forest trail leading up to the house. The track is actually a bit longer than we initially expected, but we both agreed that it serves a purpose - it's almost a ritual walk during which you unload your city stress and arrive at the house already relaxed.
We stayed at the house number 2 and very soon we both found that this is one of the best places we have visited in Estonia. To be more precise Hekso Treehouse is one of our two favourite holiday cottages in Estonia. Hekso Treehouse is very beautifully designed from inside out and every detail is properly thought through.
The house is small, but perfect - the space has been used very wisely and you will find everything you need. By the way, Hekso Treehouse does not have internet service, so it is truly a vacation home, where you can withdraw yourself from the phone. :)
Hekso Treehouse includes a small kitchen with a stove, a fridge and a sink as well as the necessary cutlery and dishes. There's also coffee and a French Press Coffee Maker.
There are two doors by the kitchen, one leading to the terrace and one leading to the bathroom that also has a door to the terrace. This makes it especially comfortable to move between the shower and sauna.
As the house, terrace and the sauna are located on a upper level, it immediately makes you feel more comfortable and safe. It's also much easier to keep your feet clean this way.
On the other side of the house there is a small living area with a chimney.
From the living from you can access the bed under the ceiling. There's a small window by the bed, which we kept open the whole time. Incoming fresh air and the sound of rain were just amazing during the night time. The window has a net so no need to worry about any bugs getting in :)
There is also an AC by the couch.
Hekso Treehouse is the very first holiday home in Estonia where we have seen proper quality pillows at. Sleep is important so last couple of months we have brought our Tempur pillows along, but this time we did not need to carry them to bed as Hekso had it covered :)
We are usually not that big fans of sauna, but the sauna at the Hekso Treehouse was so well designed and cool looking that we could not resist. Couple of hours of heating it up and voila, best sauna ever!
Usually these type of saunas wont go too hot (perfect for us), but if you keep adding water on the stones, the air heats up pretty fast and becomes very enjoyable and relaxing. And the beautiful view to the forest is just the cherry on top.
As usual, the weather kept changing so we got to enjoy the warm sun on the terrace while reading and when it rained, we curled up on the couch, lit a fire in the chimney and listened to the rain on the roof. The rain made the whole place look like a some kind of exotic destination in a tropical rain forest.
We have found that even the best hotel spas in Estonia cannot compete with these type of forest houses.
The location of Hekso Treehouse is really well chosen. First of all there is always something soothing and relaxing about Matsalu area. We could only hear the wild pigeon and some cows from the field nearby. The cows initially sounded as if they are in the forest so we started to call them 'forest cows'.
Even though you have this peace and privacy at the Hekso Treehouse you are actually not that far from the closest city and the grocery store - Lihula is only 6 minutes drive away. After the walk to the car ofcourse :)
So if you would ask me which forest cottage in Estonia we would recommend the most today, our answer would be Hekso Treehouse 🌲 We will surely visit Hekso again as we are really curious to see what this house will look like in the autumn and winter.
